Butterfly Valves vs. Ball Valves: Which One to Choose?

August 04, 2026
Ball ValvesA ball valve is a quarter-turn shut-off valve used to control the flow of gas or liquid. As the name suggests, it uses a hollow, rotating ball with a 90° bore to either allow media to pass through the port (or hole) or stop the flow entirely. Ball valves can be operated automatically or manually. While they can be actuated by air, water, or electricity, most are manually operated via a lever handle. The position of the lever makes it easy to see at a glance whether the valve is open or closed. Compared to valves that require one or more full turns to open or close, ball valves offer a much quicker way to manage flow.
A standard two-way ball valve has a single port through the middle of the ball. Multi-port ball valves, however, can direct media in multiple directions or handle inputs from multiple sources in a piping system. Ball valves come in full port, standard port, reduced port, and V-port designs. You can also choose from various body styles, such as one-piece, two-piece, and three-piece bodies.
When to Use a Ball Valve:People love ball valves for their long lifespan, versatility, fast cycling, andexcellent, leak-free sealing. They are widely used in both residential andcommercial settings. They can handle liquids and gases and are capable ofpigging (a cleaning procedure that uses a device called a "pig" toclean pipelines).
While highly practical, ballvalves aren't ideal for applications requiring highly precise flow control. You'll typically find them in piping systems for: • Oil and gas • Refining •Food and beverage • Automotive • Car wash systems • Power generation •Pharmaceuticals • Chemical additives and processing • Irrigation and waterpurification • Industrial manufacturing
Butterfly Valves Likeball valves, butterfly valves are quarter-turn valves used for on/off control. They get their name from the disc inside, which resembles a butterfly's wings.Instead of a ball with a hole, a butterfly valve uses a disc positionedperpendicular to the flow.
They come in two main designs: concentric (wafer/lug) and double-offset. In a standard design, the disc rotates around a vertical axis to let media pass. Double-offset designs feature two discs that fold against each other like butterfly wings to allow flow. Butterfly valves can be operated mechanically, manually via a lever or handwheel, or with an actuator.
Butterfly valves are not recommended for applications requiring precise flow control. While the disc usually forms a tight seal when closed, this seal becomes less reliable as pressure increases. Under high pressure, it can be harder to open the valve, and you may experience a larger pressure drop when flow resumes. In larger diameter pipes, a bypass valve is sometimes needed to relieve this pressure.
When to Use a Butterfly Valve: Butterfly valves are great for systems carrying fluids without solid particles. They are also highly suitable for sanitary applications because they don't trap media when closed (unlike some ball valves). Three-piece butterfly valves (with a removable center section) or tri-clamp connected valves are also very easy to clean. You'll often find them in: • Sewage and wastewater treatment • Municipal water supply • Chemical processing • Agricultural irrigation and processing • Food production
Ball Valve or Butterfly Valve? Key Factors to Consider: A professional valve manufacturer can help you determine the best valve for your system and answer any questions. As a general rule of thumb:
Choose a Ball Valve if: • Your application requires fast cycling. • Your system operates at pressures up to 1,000 PSI. • You need a reliable, leak-proof seal. • You need to handle both liquids and gases, or require multi-port flow. • Your system runs most of the time. • Your system requires pigging. • Your application is smaller, with pipe sizes under 6 inches.
Choose a Butterfly Valve if: • Your system operates below 250 PSI and you're on a budget. • Your system can't support the weight of a heavy valve. • Pressure drop and leakage aren't major concerns. • Your application is water-based. • You don't need to clean (pig) your system.
People generally consider butterfly valves lighter than ball valves, especially in larger sizes, because the disc puts less load on the piping system than a solid ball of the same size. Additionally, since they have fewer components, butterfly valves are typically more cost-effective.
